Whatcom Detention Educational Program

The Whatcom Detention Education Program is located in Bellingham at the Whatcom County District Court. The program provides educational offerings to students who are incarcerated.  The NWESD works closely with the school districts in Skagit County and the Juvenile Court to provide services to youth between the ages of ten and eighteen.

The Detention Center

The students in the detention center educational program are primarily adjudicated youth from Skagit County.  The educational program provides a structured learning environment with a certificated special education teacher guiding students through the standard curriculum which is based on the Washington State Learning Standards.  Students have the opportunity to attend classes in language arts, mathematics, social studies and other elective classes which may include subjects such as physical education, art, and science.  The NWESD also provides a Transition Facilitator who works with students to prepare them for secondary school completion, training, employment or further education.

Participating School Districts: Bellingham, Blaine, Ferndale, Lynden, Meridian, Mount Baker and Nooksack Valley
